Day 5: Even the worst of the worst?!

Today we see another chapter in the evil reign of Ahab, and really the disgustingly wretched heart of Jezebel, but at the end of this story, we see a couple of things that I never expected to see. Let’s jump into 1 Kings 21!

It seems like every story we see with Jezebel gets worse and worse! Folks, especially young folks, I cannot stress enough how important it is in this life to find a help mate that will check your worst impulses instead of feeding them. Naboth was just minding his own business, tending his inherited family vineyard, and he gets killed by the scheme of an evil woman. Let me quickly remind you of a scripture from Hebrews 10: 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. This should go for our friendships, our church fellowship, and for our relationships. Spur each other to good works, do not allow those you love to cultivate the worst parts of themselves, help them overcome it through the example of Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit!

Ahab’s greeting to Elijah is so funny to me. “Hello my enemy,” he says. When all Elijah has done was spoke the Word of the Lord and called Ahab to repentance. As the kids say, “it be like that sometimes.” Jesus told us that those who are lost do not like it when the light is shining on them because their deeds are made known. Being an evangelist Christian sometimes means we will catch some animosity from the same people who we are trying to show the love of Christ. Here’s what you do; love them anyway.

It seems like we are finally getting some recompense for all the evil Ahab and Jezebel have done! But wait, there’s more!

WHAT!?!? You mean God is going to have mercy on this scoundrel!? Before we get on our high horse, let me remind you of some of the sweetest words ever penned: “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a WRETCH like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I see.” God has the same mercy for even the worst of the worst, which is a theme we will see again soon in our studies, than he does for you and me. So, when you see the travesties of culture played out on your TV screens, do not allow it to make you hate. Jesus died for all the world, even the worst of the worst. Allow the fallenness of creation to break your heart, give you a sense of urgency in sharing the Gospel, and a brighter hope for the coming of Christ!
