Day 6: Walking in step with the Spirit
Galatians 5: 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
When we think of someone walking in step with the Spirit, Stephen in the book of Acts shines brightly. Scripture says he was “a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 6:5). As he served the early church, miracles and wonders followed—not because Stephen was extraordinary in himself, but because he was surrendered to the Spirit’s leading.
Even when facing trial before the Sanhedrin, Stephen didn’t rely on clever arguments or human boldness. The Word of God says this:
Acts 6:10 “They could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.”
In his final moments, as stones rained down on him, Stephen lifted his eyes to heaven and saw the glory of God, Jesus His Son, and began declaring forgiveness over his executioners. That’s not natural strength, that’s supernatural love, fully aligned with the Spirit.
Walking in step with the Spirit means more than an occasional prayer or a moment of inspiration. It means a daily surrender to the Spirit’s leading, letting Him guide your thoughts, your words, and your actions. Stephen’s example shows us that when we are filled with the Spirit, ordinary people can live with extraordinary courage, grace, and love.
Fasting helps strip away distractions so that our ears can better hear His voice. As your physical hunger grows, let it serve as a reminder that your soul hungers to stay in rhythm with the Spirit. The Spirit wants to empower you in weakness, direct your decisions, and overflow through you so that others see Christ in your life.
Today, think of an area where you’ve been leading yourself instead of letting the Spirit lead. Maybe a job search or a career change, possibly in your relationships, or maybe in your hobbies or entertainment. Surrender that to God in prayer today. When you face a difficult situation, or even one that will lead you away from the Lord instead of closer to Him, pause before reacting and pray, “Holy Spirit, guide my steps.”
Stephen’s life reminds us that Spirit-led living is not reserved for apostles, prophets, or pastors, but it is the inheritance of every believer. If you belong to Christ, His Spirit lives in you. As you walk in step with Him today, you will find courage you didn’t know you had and peace the world cannot understand.
