Day 10: Praying through every decision.
Luke 6: 12 One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he prayed to God all night. 13 At daybreak he called together all of his disciples and chose twelve of them to be apostles. Here are their names:
14 Simon (whom he named Peter),Andrew (Peter’s brother),James,John,Philip,Bartholomew,15 Matthew,Thomas,James (son of Alphaeus),Simon (who was called the zealot),16 Judas (son of James),Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).
As we continue looking at the prayer life of Jesus, we discover another powerful pattern: Jesus prayed before making decisions.
In Luke 6, before choosing the twelve apostles who would help carry the gospel into the world, Jesus spent the entire night in prayer. Before moving forward with a decision that would shape the future of His ministry, He sought the heart of the Father.
This reminds us of something important: prayer was not an afterthought for Jesus, it was His starting point. Many times, we do the opposite. We make plans, weigh our options, move ahead, and then ask God to bless what we’ve already decided, but Jesus modeled a better way. He sought the Father before acting.
While this moment in Luke records a major decision, the Gospels also show that Jesus lived with constant dependence on the Father. Prayer wasn’t only for life’s biggest crossroads, it was the posture of His daily life. God cares about more than just the “big decisions.” He desires to guide every step we take.
When we bring our decisions to Him, large and small, we invite His wisdom into our lives. Prayer slows us down long enough to listen instead of rushing forward on our own understanding.
During this season of prayer and fasting, ask the Lord to shape your heart so that prayer becomes your first response instead of your last resort. The more we seek Him in every decision, the more our lives align with His will.
Prayer Focus
Father,
You see every step of my life, and Your wisdom is greater than my understanding. Teach me to bring my decisions to You before I act. Help me develop the habit of seeking Your guidance in both the big moments and the small ones. As I fast and pray, give me a heart that depends on You daily and trusts Your direction for my life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
