Day 14: How to pray for ourselves!

Psalm 139: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;    test me and know my anxious thoughts.24 Point out anything in me that offends you,    and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

Prayer is not only about praying for others. God also invites us to bring our own hearts, struggles, and needs before Him. Praying for ourselves is not selfish, it is an act of humility that acknowledges our dependence on God.

King David modeled this kind of prayer. Instead of hiding his struggles, he asked God to examine his heart and lead him in the right path. When we pray this way, we open ourselves to the transforming work of God, but sometimes we struggle with how to pray for ourselves. Scripture gives us several helpful patterns.

1. Pray for a Clean Heart

Like David, we can ask God to search our hearts and remove anything that does not honor Him.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.” -  Psalm 51:10

This kind of prayer invites God to shape our character and purify our motives.

2. Pray for Wisdom

Life is full of decisions, and God promises to guide those who ask Him.

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.” - James 1:5

Pray for clarity, discernment, and the ability to recognize God’s direction.

3. Pray for Strength

Following Christ is not always easy. We need God’s strength to live faithfully.

“I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.” - Ephesians 3:16

Ask God to strengthen your faith, your endurance, and your commitment to Him.

4. Pray for Spiritual Growth

God’s desire is not only to help us through life but to transform us.

“May you be filled with the knowledge of his will… then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord.” - Colossians 1:9–10

Pray that your life would increasingly reflect the character of Christ.

5. Pray for Your Desires to Align with God

One of the most powerful prayers we can pray is asking God to shape what we want.

“I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”  - Psalm 40:8

Instead of simply asking God to bless our plans, we ask Him to help us desire His will above everything else.

When we pray for ourselves in these ways, we are not placing ourselves at the center of prayer. Instead, we are inviting God to do His work within us so that our lives reflect Him more clearly. Prayer becomes the place where God forms our hearts, strengthens our faith, and leads us closer to Him.

Today, ask God to search your heart, strengthen your faith, and guide your life according to His will.

Prayer focus

Father,

You know my heart completely. Search me and reveal anything that needs to change. Give me wisdom for the decisions I face, strength to follow You faithfully, and a deeper desire to live according to Your will. Shape my character so that my life reflects the love and holiness of Christ. As I continue seeking You, transform my heart and guide my steps.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
