Day 17: Being sent with Courage.
Joshua 1: 6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Imagine a soldier standing on the edge of the battlefield. He knows the enemy is fierce, the fight will be hard, and the outcome uncertain. Yet as he grips his sword, he remembers the words of his commander: “You are not alone. The victory is already secured.” Suddenly, courage rises in his chest—not because the battle is easy, but because he knows his commander goes before him.
In many ways, this is the Christian life. Sharing the gospel, standing for Christ, and living boldly in a world that often pushes back can feel like entering a battlefield. Fear whispers, “What if they reject you? What if you fail?” But God’s Word reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear—it’s the decision to obey even when fear is present, because the Lord Himself goes with us.
Joshua was stepping into Moses’ role, a daunting task. His mentor and friend had just died leaving him the role of leading Israel into the Promised Land. The land was full of enemies, and God’s people were easily discouraged. Yet God’s command was clear: “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you.”
As followers of Christ, our mission can feel overwhelming. Sharing the gospel, living as light in darkness, and holding to truth in a culture that often opposes it can stir up fear. But the promise given to Joshua is echoed for us in the Great Commission:
Matthew 28:20b …and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
The King of the universe has promised to be with us when we lace up our boots in the Army of God to build His Kingdom!
Courage doesn’t come from personality or natural boldness—it comes from the presence of God. When the Holy Spirit fills us, we are no longer standing on our own strength but moving with heaven’s authority. That is why even the timid can become fearless witnesses when surrendered to Christ.
Are there areas in your Christian life where you are holding back in fear? Maybe it’s sharing your faith with a coworker, inviting a neighbor to church, or stepping into a ministry God has called you to. Take courage today: your obedience does not depend on your strength but on His. When you step out in faith, God steps in with power.
Today, write down one area where fear has been holding you back, and pray specifically for courage to obey God in that area this week. Ask God for one bold opportunity today to live courageously for Him, whether it’s speaking up about your faith, standing firm in truth, or serving someone sacrificially. Then, step into it with the confidence that He goes with you.
It is when the full body of Christ works individually and corporately to share the Gospel when the Spirit of God shows up in the mightest of ways!
