Day 4: Unanswered Prayers
Don’t worry, I will not be quoting a Garth Brooks song. A little while ago, a pastor that I love to listen to came across a podcaster who has a huge following asking why God hadn’t answered his prayers. I loved what he had to say because it was all biblical. Maybe you have been in a season where it feels like God hasn’t answered any of your prayers. Today I want to show you 8 reasons from scripture that might be the reason.
I am going to try to frame this carefully. Not as condemnation, but as invitation. Here are 8 biblical reasons God may not answer prayer (or may not answer the way we expect):
1. Unconfessed sin
Psalm 66:18 If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
Unrepented sin dulls intimacy. God doesn’t ignore His children, but sin disrupts fellowship.
This isn’t about perfection, God knows only He is perfect, it’s about correct heart posture.
2. Wrong motives
James 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
Prayer isn’t a tool to baptize selfish ambition, God answers prayers aligned with His purposes, not our will.
3. Doubt and Double-Mindedness
James 1:6 But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. 7 Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.
Faith isn’t pretending or doubting, but it is trusting. Doublemindedness creates instability in prayer. And Scripture tells us that if we are doubting, we shouldn’t expect an answer.
4. Unforgiveness toward others
Mark 11: 24 I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. 25 But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.
Jesus ties relational forgiveness to prayer effectiveness. A closed heart toward others can close spiritual channels. There are several teachings on this in the Gospels.
5. Disharmony in Marriage
1 Peter 3: 7 In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.
Relational fracture at home affects spiritual authority in prayer, especially for us fellas! “Love your wife like Christ loves the church!”
6. Asking Outside of God’s Will
1 John 5: 14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. 15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.
God always answers prayers aligned with His will, but sometimes the answer is no because the request isn’t. This ties beautifully into what we talked about yesterday.
7. We have pride Instead of humility
2 Chronicles 7: 14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.
Pride resists dependence and angers the Lord. Prayer requires surrender, not control. Jesus modeled this for us over and over!
8. God is doing something greater
Isaiah 55: 8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
Sometimes God’s “no” or “wait” is protection, preparation, or redirection. Silence is not absence; delay is not denial. Sometimes God just simply has better in store for us.
If God isn’t answering, don’t assume He isn’t listening. Ask whether He’s refining, realigning, or revealing something deeper in you.
Prayer Focus - and this is a long one
Father,
I come before You humbly, not assuming silence means absence, but asking You to search us. If there is unconfessed sin in me, bring it into the light. I do not want to cherish what separates us from intimacy with You. Cleanse our hearts and restore fellowship.
If my motives have been selfish, purify them. Where I have asked for comfort more than Christlikeness, blessing more than obedience, realign my desires with Your will.
Where doubt has crept in, steady me. Make me single-minded in faith and anchor me so I am not tossed by fear or circumstance or doubt.
If I am holding unforgiveness, reveal that to me. I want to forgive those who have wronged me because I cannot ask for mercy while withholding it.
If there is disorder in my home or dishonor in my closest relationships, correct them. Make me gentle, understanding, and humble so that nothing hinders my prayers.
If I have been asking anything outside of Your will, teach me to want what You want. Shape my prayers until they echo the cries of heaven.
If pride has taken root, uproot it. I humble myself before You. I do not demand answers but I depend on You.
And Father, if Your answer has been “wait” or “no,” help me trust that You are doing something greater than I can see. Guard me from interpreting delay as denial or silence as indifference.
I want to draw near to You today! Refine me, realign me, and renew me in Your presence!
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
